The town, which has grown since the 13th century, lies directly in front of the Fehmarnsund Bridge and has a well-preserved town centre in brick architecture. Various cosy alleys with original shops, shops and pretty cafés lead off from the cobbled old market square, where a traditional fruit and vegetable market is held regularly. There is also a medium-sized department stores' in the town centre for browsing
The harbour area also offers many nice clothing shops, a fishing shop and various cosy restaurants and cafes. In the modernised "Fischhalle" you can get fish sandwiches to suit every taste as well as many other fish specialities. Fresh fish from the cutter is also available here, of course, or you can book a fishing trip yourself (deep-sea fishing)
During the season there are various events in the town, such as "Tanz in den Mai" (Dance into May), midnight run, "Fisherman" triathlon, the wine festival or in July the big harbour festival with Ferris wheel.
The approx. 4 km long beach is never as crowded as in some other Baltic Sea resorts, even in high season. There is a nudist section near the pier with sun decks and a playground, and there is also a separate area for four-legged friends. Water sports enthusiasts can head further west (holiday park) in windy and stormy weather.
The large marina has been completely renovated and offers space for up to approx. 1000 boats. The promenade there with playgrounds, cafes and small shops also has cosy places for barbecues.
The two very popular trams connect the most beautiful points of Heiligenhafen and offer fun with a great view of the country, the people, nature reserves and the lake.
